Silver Comet Trail, Meet the Beltline!
My friends call me a “Georgia Peach” all the time, I was born and raised in the south, and spent most of my life here in Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up here, I hear all the time how Atlanta is not a "walkable" city. And, I agree. I really do. When my husband and I travel to other cities, like Chicago, Boston, NYC, Paris, London, etc., etc. I get it. Atlanta definitely doesn't have going for it what those cities have. We are spread out, and definitely are lacking in the public transportation department. But then I see programs and foundations like the PATH Foundation, and I remind myself that there is always progress being made and different opportunities to grow.
Atlanta will probably never have the mass transit of NYC, so what is another option? I will certainly take the longest paved trail in the United States. Connecting downtown Atlanta all the way to Anniston, Alabama? Okay, that's pretty cool. And one day, we will be able to get on our bikes, and bike all the way up to the North GA mountains, safely! Not in a bike lane on a highway. Also, cool. And, we can scoot around to different neighbors connected by all these paths created by the PATH foundation that has been working for the past 27 years, somewhat behind the scenes to make this all become a reality. I'll take that reality. It's a pretty exciting time to call Atlanta home, lots of changes happening all around the city and the Southeast in general.
